Jennifer Steinkamp’s Digital Installation Illuminates Market Street

SFMOMA is projecting Jennifer Steinkamp’s It’s a nice day for a white wedding. onto the Humboldt Bank Building in San Francisco through January 2027.

SFMOMA has brought Jennifer Steinkamp’s digital artwork It’s a nice day for a white wedding. to the façade of the Humboldt Bank Building at 785 Market Street in San Francisco. The free off-site installation is shown daily from twilight to 10 p.m. at the intersection of Market Street and Yerba Buena Lane.

The first presentation runs from 22 August to 3 December 2026. It returns from 14 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. The project is part of Yerba Buena Illuminated, a Yerba Buena Partnership programme that uses open-air projections to bring large-scale art into the neighbourhood’s public spaces.

Created in 2008, Steinkamp’s work is being shown outdoors and at monumental scale for the first time. The projection covers the Beaux-Arts façade with animated red, white and yellow wedding flowers. Its title refers to Billy Idol’s 1982 song White Wedding, while the visual composition replaces the song’s darker associations with moving floral imagery.

Steinkamp is a Los Angeles-based media artist who has used computer animation since the 1980s to create organic and abstract forms in motion. Her installations use simulated light and movement to alter how viewers perceive an object and the physical space around it.

The Market Street presentation places a work from SFMOMA’s collection outside the museum and makes it visible without admission. Visitors should note the evening viewing hours rather than the museum’s daytime schedule.

Why it matters

The project gives the public free evening access to a major digital artwork and uses a historic downtown façade to connect SFMOMA’s collection with the surrounding neighbourhood.
