Microhistories of the Andes Exhibition Opens at San Antonio Museum of Art

The San Antonio Museum of Art presents “Microhistories of the Andes,” an exhibition showcasing diverse artworks from the Andean region spanning over a millennium.

The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) has opened the exhibition “Microhistories of the Andes,” which will remain on view through May 21, 2028. This exhibition brings together artworks from Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru, representing a timeline from the first millennium CE to the twentieth century.

The display features a variety of media, including textiles, ceramic sculptures, paintings, metalwork, and feather arts. These objects collectively illustrate broad narratives of creativity, spirituality, and cosmovision within the Andean world. The exhibition employs the concept of microhistory, focusing on individual people, places, objects, or events as entry points to broader historical questions.

By highlighting specific artifacts, “Microhistories of the Andes” encourages visitors to engage deeply with the material culture of the region and to consider the wider contexts in which these objects were created and used. Many of the works are being shown at SAMA for the first time, including recent gifts to the museum’s collection.

The exhibition explores themes such as Andean cosmologies, cultural perspectives on agricultural practices, objects of devotion and spirituality, and the histories of materials across different landscapes and eras. Through these topics, the show offers insight into the diverse and complex histories of the Andean region.

“Microhistories of the Andes” provides a detailed and nuanced look at the cultural and spiritual life of the Andes through its material heritage. The extended duration of the exhibition allows visitors ample opportunity to experience and reflect on these narratives.

Why it matters

This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore Andean history and culture through focused stories told by small but significant objects. It broadens understanding of the region’s artistic and spiritual traditions and enriches the museum’s collection with newly acquired works.
