The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has announced that Tina M. Campt will serve as the Scholar in Residence for the 2026–27 academic year. This appointment is made possible through the support of the Alice L. Walton Foundation.
Campt comes to MoMA from Princeton University, where she is the Roger S. Berlind ’52 Professor of Humanities in the department of art and archaeology and director of the Princeton Atelier at the Lewis Center for the Arts. Her work focuses on Black feminist theory, visual culture, and contemporary art.
She is also the lead convener of the Practicing Refusal Collective and the Princeton Collaboratorium for Radical Aesthetics. Campt has coedited two art catalogues: "Into the Unseen: The Walther Collection" (2026) and "Imagining Everyday Life: Engagements with Vernacular Photography" (2024). The latter was recognized as the 2020 Photography Catalogue of the Year by Paris Photo and the Aperture Foundation.
Most recently, Campt coedited "Thinking from Black: A Lexicon" (2026) with the Practicing Refusal Collective. She and several editors presented excerpts from the book at a launch event at MoMA PS1 on September 14, 2026. Her next monograph, "Art in a Time of Sorrow," is scheduled for publication in fall 2027.
MoMA highlights that research and scholarship on modern and contemporary art have been central to its mission since its founding. The museum continues to build on this legacy by expanding narratives, fostering interdisciplinary connections, and sharing research through innovative, digital-forward strategies.
