The Whitney Museum of American Art has announced that Meg Onli, a curator at the museum, and Zack Winokur, a choreographer and stage director, will curate the 2028 edition of the Whitney Biennial. The exhibition is planned to open in March 2028.
Meg Onli is currently a curator at the Whitney and recently co-curated the museum’s Roy Lichtenstein retrospective, which will remain on view until May 10, 2027. Her ongoing involvement with the museum’s programming provides her with direct insight into its curatorial direction.
Zack Winokur brings experience from the performing arts. He is the co-founder and artistic director of AMOC* (American Modern Opera Company), which organized a five-week program at Lincoln Center in Manhattan’s Upper West Side last year. Winokur has also served as artistic director of Little Island, a cultural venue on the Hudson River near the Whitney Museum.
His stage and screen projects include directing productions at Opera Philadelphia and the Santa Fe Opera, as well as working on the expanded version of The Wizard of Oz currently showing at Sphere in Las Vegas. This background in both visual and performing arts is expected to inform the approach to the biennial.
The Whitney Biennial is a major contemporary art exhibition that often attracts debate and political discussion. The 2026 edition was notably free of controversy, in contrast to previous years that saw protests and disputes. The 2028 biennial will be organized under the leadership of Onli and Winokur.
